WG3: Critical Review and Insight into HDR Delivery

Goal
To critically examine all aspects of delivering HDR video to a viewer via a display.

Objectives
To develop a quality metric for comparing the quality of the delivered digital representation with the original captured or created world scene.

Methodology
HDR content can be delivered to viewers via HDR enabled displays, or the luminance contrast can be compressed using algorithms known as tone mappers, to produce an enhanced (but not true HDR image) on traditional LDR displays.

WG3 will identify and analyse tone mapping methods and HDR display technologies across sectors using the critical review framework. This analysis will also investigate the interplay among dynamic range performance and other attributes of underlying display technology such as viewingangle variations, frame rate, motion artefacts and colour gamut. Tone mapping has been used for many years for digital imagery (and before that for printing) and thus the partners in this WG will have access to a large body of research which has already been undertaken or is currently being carried out on the topic.

Implementation
The major challenge for WG3 is to compare and contrast tone mapping algorithms and investigate how authentically existing and emerging HDR display technologies are able to represent real world lighting. Many of the research projects that HDRi will coordinate will be able to provide significant key data directly to WG3.

The critical review of tone mapping algorithms and display technologies will include:

  • Identifying the applications for which it was originally developed
  • Ascertaining the sectors it is currently used in and their interdependency
  • Specifying the sector specific features of the method
  • Determining the stakeholders for the method
  • Specifying the method and its underlying theory
  • Fully evaluating the method with regard to its quality, performance, range of lighting which can be represented, etc.

Expected Outcomes
WG3 will develop a systematically collected knowledge pool of existing HDR delivery methods which clearly identifies:

  • The advantages and disadvantages of each method
  • The likely disruption that would arise if a method were to be replaced or improved

This knowledge pool will provide the key insights into current tone mappers and display methods. This knowledge pool will be also available to all other WGs and will be made publically accessible to the wider HDR.
